College welcomes announcement on increase in medical trainee numbers

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow very much welcomes the announcement by the Scottish Government of an additional 139 posts for medical trainees to be introduced in 2022. The posts will provide much needed additional trainees for the future medical workforce in Scotland in specialties including cancer, psychiatry, anaesthetics, intensive care, public health and respiratory medicine.

President of the College, Professor Jackie Taylor said,

“We have been very vocal in our concerns regarding staff shortages in NHS Scotland. These additional training posts are a very welcome sign that the government has been listening and that steps are being taken to move in the right direction.

“With current extraordinary pressures on our health service there is still much to be done across planning, supply and retention to ensure we have a sustainable medical workforce in NHS Scotland. We look forward to continue working with the Scottish Government on the important issue of workforce planning in order to address the chronic workforce shortages.”
