Royal College marks Founder’s Day

Fellows and Members gathered at Glasgow Cathedral on Sunday 8 December for a special Founder’s Day Service.

The annual event commemorates the College’s foundation in 1599 by the granting of a Royal Charter from King James VI. Each year, a wreath is laid on founder Maister Peter Lowe’s grave in the grounds of the Cathedral.

This year’s service had a special significance as the College marks its 425th anniversary. That’s 425 years of innovation, standing up for medical professionals, and enhancing patient care.

The service was led by the Rev Mark Johnstone, and the sermon was given by Rt Rev Dr Shaw Paterson, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and a member of the College Lay Advisory Group.

Our founding members set out with a mission to improve and regulate healthcare standards in Glasgow and the West of Scotland. Today, 425 years on, the College is a global community of 15,000 medical professionals from 100 countries, improving patient care through education, training and assessment.
