The survey aims to capture the career choices of UK doctors in training – and improve understanding of any barriers to training and working in the NHS.
Doctors in the four nations who are currently in training, as well as those who may have started training and left, are being asked to complete the survey.
Cameron Boyle, Surgical Vice-Chair of the Resident Doctors’ Committee said: “We have worked to put together this valuable questionnaire to try and establish concerns that fellow resident doctors have and what barriers there may be to training. We have a unique position that our College has both physicians and surgeons and we want to represent you.
“Our College is committed to supporting a workforce that is supported and valued through our training and beyond. We hope to be able to use the information gathered to work with NHS employers and governments to suggest ideas and solutions on how to improve our experiences and improve the retention of residents working within the NHS. Through the College, we can have communication with these bodies, and we intend to work in collaboration with them with your help.”
The survey is open to all UK-based doctors, surgeons and GPs in training, as well as those who were previously engaged in a training programme. It will assess whether current training programmes are fit for purpose and identify where improvements can be made, including looking at why doctors choose to leave a training programme.
The survey will help to ensure the voices of resident doctors are involved in the highest level of decision making by offering crucial insight into the challenges they face.
The survey will be open from today (22 May 2025) and will run until 30 June 2025 – it should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.
