SAS week 2024

Each year, our College celebrates SAS week. It is an opportunity to celebrate specialty and associate specialist doctors and dentists who, right across their various professions, form a vital part of the NHS workforce.

Thisara C Weerasuriya is a Specialty Doctor in Trauma and Orthopaedics at NHS Ayrshire and Arran, based at the University Hospital, Ayr. He is a member of our College Council, and our Inclusion Advisory Group.

He encourages younger colleagues who are unsure of their future career to look at the “potential” of a SAS role. “It’s not a gloomy picture and not an end point for your career.

“There is opportunity for you to specialise in a particular field and then become a specialist specialty doctor. In education, you can get into university lecturing and teaching.

“You can join the College, become a member, and become a mentor – so there are loads of opportunities. You need to keep an open mind and keep looking for them”.

SAS at our college

Year on year, we are committed to improving the representation of SAS within our College. That is why we were honoured to host the recent Academy of Medical Royal Colleges conference (AOMRC) here in Glasgow our College.

It was an invaluable opportunity to hear about our colleagues’ differing career paths into SAS, attend a variety of talks from subject experts, and create connections with other specialty professionals. Find out more about the AOMRC conference.
